Wedding Wednesday- Another good dress find.

August5

Any bride can tell you that decent dress shops are few and far between, but helping a good friend find her dress I happened upon not just a decent dress shop, but a wonderful dress shop.

Bridals by Elana- located at  556-D Ritchie Highway (Route 2 South), Severna Park, MD 21146.

Bridals by Elana carries a really diverse selection of designers and they handmake dresses, as well.  To see pictures of some styles they carry check out their website.  (As on many wedding dress sites, they will direct you to the collections of the designers they carry.) Their prices start at below $1,000 and go up depending on the level of detail requested.  But they have beautiful dresses at all price levels- I have first hand experience we saw multiple gowns priced at around $850 that were just stunning.

What impressed me most though was their level of customer service.  They were a full service bridal shop- meaning they help you in and out of the dress, they will pin the bustles, they will make veils and matching accessories; yet, they were not pushy or giving you a hard sell.  Instead they sell dresses based on their great selection, eye for beautiful designs and customer service.

The showroom was large and comfortable, it’s in Severna Park which is only about 30-40 minutes from the DC area without rush hour traffic of course.  Appointments are necessary, but they are usually not booked until about a week before appointment times.  I really truly recommend this store for a good bridal experience where you don’t feel belittled or pressured.

A photo might be worth a good bit, but a good photographer is worth more.

I wanted to feature my wedding photographer this Wedding Wednesday.  Her name is Dominique Attaway.  She did a fantastic job at our wedding and my portrait.  She has a real eye for light and is very down to earth. Although she resides in Charlottesville she is willing to travel and does weddings in the DC/NOVA area and in other areas.  She travelled a good two hours to make it to our wedding.

You can find her blog here.  She really worked with us so well and quickly could get really good photographs of hubby, friends, family and I.  I was delighted to see pictures of people laughing and smiling at our wedding.  You scrolled through the pictures and could just see the joy.  Her rates are very reasonable and I really think she has a way of matching your photographs towards your wedding.  We had a very formal wedding and the pictures really matched the theme well.  But if you look at her more casual weddings they also look so appropriate.  I have worked with a couple professional photgraphers and found that she photographed me better than many people could, so I was really happy.  She also has a list of other photographers she recommends in other areas.  Her portraits and photos of children and families are also great so if you can get down to Charlottesville, or need a great wedding photographer at a good price definitely investigate her site and blog.

I am not featuring any of her work here, as her sites really showcase it best.

A Bag to Remember

July5

I don’t have many purses, except if you count the few small bags, most of which I have had since high school, one since before elementary school that are mainly just small cloth able to hold…. my phone.  Still probably all countable on one hand.  And evening bags are an even more rare thing for me to own.  It’s not that I don’t love or appreciate a nice purse, it just isn’t my thing to spend money on, but this purse here is one I had to own.

DSCN1912

The brand is BeeGee Bags.  And the maker of the purses is a local Arlingtonian, which is one reason I bought it.  I really like to support local artists when I buy products.  As a quasi-artist jeweler myself, I appreciate things that are hand crafted.

I also like them because they are so colorful, you could wear them with something that doesn’t really match, but coodinates and it is very cute.  My Aunt would love these as they have big, bold retro prints which is something she adores, and she really likes evening bags and purses.  They suggest them for a bridesmaid gift, I actually had a bridesmaid carry mine during the wedding then had it at my table after so I could put on lipstick and etc.  They are very well crafted.  And the owner of BeeGee Bags is just as nice as can be.  So if you want a colorful, fun evening bag definitely check them out.  I love peacocks, so currently I am coveting this peacock one here which is just beautiful.   And ask her to put a couple business cards in the purse so when people ask about your extremely cute purse you can give them a card.

Wedding Thursday: Posture

June11

Yea yea peeps I came back and now I am still late.

Workload was fierce when I came back.  Adjusting to the job again hard.  Contractors are ripping apart my kitchen and bathroom and while the rooms not being ripped apart are stacked with wedding presents.

But never fear in a couple weeks it will all be pretty, fresh and new.

But the blog should not suffer.  I will try harder and on that note you get two posts tonight.

The First is Wedding Wednesday.  This is just going to be a quick tip for all you brides.  Practice your posture.  Do it way beforehand because if you don’t train yourself early you won’t remember on your wedding day when so much else is running through your mind.  I have pictures, and they are beautiful, but I wish I had better posture.  It is something I have always struggled with.

On the other side, I have a few friends with always beautiful posture and pictures of them just look  so nice.  So do it.  I know you don’t want to, but you will thank me later.  I say this while slouching on the couch, but really I try sometimes.  And I am going to work on it.  Beautiful posture makes beautiful people, and it stops you from becoming a hunchback in old age.  Two big perks.

Ok kids thats the tip and it may be short and sweet, but it is huge.

Wedding Wednesday: Cake

June3

People will tell you that your wedding cake doesn’t really matter.  In your mind you might think the wedding cake doesn’t really matter.  And that is sort of right.

While I wouldn’t spend oodles of money on a pretty cake, I think it should look nice and compliment your tastes.  But I wouldn’t sacrifice taste over looks.  Good tasting wedding cake sticks in your mind.  We have friends who got married in the outer banks who had a key lime flavored cake that was one of the best cakes I have ever eaten let alone wedding cake.

I hate fondant and buttercream.  To me fondant is thick goopy sugar that is gross.  If I am served a cake with fondant I will politely nibble a few bites of the cake and then put it down.  Buttercream to me has too much butter.  Most of the time there is so much fat that the taxture is too greasy for me and loses most of the taste.

Hubby hates coconut.  Really he likes bundt and coffee cakes above all others.

Luckily we both love the taste of the Smith Island Cake.  Maryland’s State Cake.  Never tasted it?  Oooh are you in for a treat.  Smith Island cakes are like a traditional Southern layer cake, except each of its ten layers is baked seperately and not cut from a larger cake.  The traditional cake has chocolate between each layer then it is iced in chocolate icing.  The effect is that the chocolate kind of mixes in a tiny bit with the outside of the layers giving it a really moist taste, but good cake texture.  I think the Sweet Shop in Crisfield Maryland is one of the best places to get one from.  They ship too! They are a small group of ladies from Crisfield, Maryland who formed a business, went online and are now moving to a bigger place soon so people can watch them make the cakes.  They are a great group who even shipped icing to the Greenbrier for me, when the Greenbrier couldn’t get it just right.  Thanks!!!

small-receschocolatecake

Normally they look like this.  The Greenbrier, however, made one that looked like this:

636

The icing was just plain normal icing which saved us a lot of money as fondant is expensive.  Some hydrangea and birds my Aunt carved for me were added to the top.  After seeing many wedding cakes my advice is: go simple.  The intricate cakes are really pretty, but you are going to eat it and really save the moola for other things.

If you haven’t tried a Smith Island Cake I highly recommend it.  While not every place may have the guts to try to attempt  it, if you are in Maryland or close by I bet you can get one.

But my real advice is go with what you like.  Like pie- go for it.  Mad about cookies?  DO IT.  Go with what you like, go with what tastes good, and don’t get all worried about it, and for goodness sakes don’t spend massive amounts of money on it.  And please I beg of you don’t freeze it and eat it on your anniversary- for goodness sakes bake a new cake or make him buy you one.  Personally I recommend ordering the traditional chocolate Smith Island Cake for your anniversary, even if you didn’t have it at the wedding.

Wedding Wedneseday- The Jewels

May6

Ok peeps today Wedding Wedneseday is all about the jewels.  Well actually one particular jewelry site that I am particularly found of: Mali Jewelry and Accessories.

I first visited this store shopping the Miracle Mile in Chicago and when I was in the store what hit me most was how perfect the jewelry would be for a wedding.  But online they have a huge selection of one of a kind necklaces and accessories which are just beautiful, especially this year when big jewelry is in.

Their jewelry would also be very appropriate for a Mother’s Day present as they have some cool chunky jewelry that any Mom would love.

The bonus for you is that I suscribe to their mailing list and this month they have a 20% off Mother’s Day discount.  Just enter 20 at the checkout.

Wedding Wednesday- They put the blush in blushing bride.

April29

This Wedding Wednesday I am exhausted, absolutely exhausted…

Wedding portraits last weekend, this weekend is an endless list of things to finish so this week Wedding Wednesday is going to be short and sweet:

Make-up.

You have a couple choices airbrushed make-up, having a salon or spa do your make-up, get it done at a cosmetic counter or do it yourself.

Air brushed make-up:

If you are going to do this make sure you get it done by someone with a good reputation.

h2009_spring

In the DC area I suggest Rodney Pinion at Andre Chreky.  Pinion uses an airbrushing gun to gently spray tiny droplets of color onto your face. The results are very natural: Even those with a fear of foundation will love it. You can get base, blush, eyeshadow, and even brow tints, all of which last for ages, go on remarkably evenly, are hypoallergenic, and won’t clog pores.  The bonus is it photographs really well because of the even matte finish.

Having it done at a Salon or Spa:

I am not very good with make-up.  I don’t normally wear it and putting it on scares me a little.  So I trust the professionals.  Again reputation is key.  Not only should they have good make-up, but a good knowledge of what will photograph well.  Sparkly powder or eyeshadow with sheen does not photograph well.  I recommend splurging on this a little more than you regularly would.  Find someone who does this often, who has good credentials and does this often.  People that work often with people being photographed really helps.  I recommend when you do your make-up test to do some photographs, and really scrutinize the look.

Having it done by a cosmetic counter:

I really don’t recommend this unless you can test the results.  Although, I had a great experience last weekend at the Bobbi Brown counter at Belk in Charlottesville.  I didn’t have a salon to do my make-up for my wedding portrait because it was in Charlottesville, not the Greenbrier and I didn’t drive down from the city.  Luckily I found someone really experienced.  If you go this route, you want the make-up woman who is older and has worked there forever, not the young thing, but their make-up should look good. They will have done a lot of make-up, they will know the product and have a good eye.

Also choose the brand carefully.  You should probably go with what you normally use, but consider your look.  I find Bobbi Brown to be very natural.  They don’t have a lot of bright colors and that would look odd on me, who never wear make-up.  Really I think natural brides look best.  so unless you really want a “look” you might consider going that route.  Certainly don’t switch to a brand you have never used.  Many people are allergic to cosmetics.  Mom is allergic to blue eyeliner from Lancome, I am allergic to a lot of Clinique products.  But I think looking at the make-up and testing the products you will find something you can use.  this bonus is so you can learn how to apply it and use it for the honeymoon.

Make sure to ask if they have any sample products like these online that you get for free with an order:

e3tt_m

e5fw_m

Do it yourself:

Don’t… just don’t.  Unless you are getting married out in the middle of nowhere.  If you do go get your colors done and buy the products they recommend that you don’t have, especially correctors and concealers.  Practice, practice, practice.  But really you are going to be so stressed out, do you really want that added pressure?

So think about it, test it out and find what works for you.

Wedding Wednesday- Essentials to keep you sane: affordable wedding favors and useful applications for planning.

April22

This week I am finishing up a lot of last minute details.  So I thought I might help you with some of yours.

First up Honeymoon:

There are so many great places to go on your honeymoon.  We are going to San Fransisco and Yountsville to the French Laundry, and then jetting off to Melbourne, Sydney and Hayman Island.

To keep your jet-setting straight use Tripit.com.

logo_84x40_trans

You can send Opentable.com dining reservations directly to your profile.  You can upload flight plans.  Add stops.  Then on your trip you can pull up your plans on your mobile phone or iphone.  You can also network and add other people so they can help update your plans, as well.  Super handy when you have a techno Fiance and a Foodie like me, who likes to plan the eating!

Another great website to use for wedding planning is: Weddingwire.com

find-vendors-big

Wedding wire has a lot of tools.  I will admit I haven’t used many at all.  For me, I have 3 vendors to deal with The Greenbrier, the photographer Dominique Attaway and our music.  So managing vendors no biggie.  The RSVP coordinator is cool.  It is just as easy as doing your own Excel or Google Document spreadsheet.  Then you can use those people and do table settings.  I think the table seating charts are really handy.  That is a document that would be a pain in the butt to create in a program, and would be a mess on paper.  Especially with my un-traditional family.  The wedding checklist is also handy.  We have long running checklists, getting smaller day by day!

You can also make a timeline, or ask for help.  I did neither, but I am not that much of a techno, I really believe a lot in paper.  Fiance, however, likes all this online and shareable.  So this helps us both stay happy.

Next we are onto Favors:

We have a slight bird theme, not a sex in the city bird, but love birds.  We have doves that nest on our balcony every year and they are very special birdies to us.  However, we also love tea.  I also think favors that can be used as place cards are uber cool so here are some that I spotted that I think people would be happy to get:

First off Weddingthings.com:

Love Bird Salt and Peppers

11062na-s

Bird Wine Stoppers- caveat does anyone else have a million wine stoppers?  Because I do.  But these are super cute and would look nice out.

784_2143_thumb

These are eco-friendly flower cones.  They would be great for Jordan Almonds from Superior Nut Company.  They have Jordan almonds in a bunch of colors and are fast with delivery.  I was very happen with them.  Plus if your guests are a little hungry before the meal they can snack.

Tea Infuser in really nice packaging.

My wedding favors are not on here, they will be after the wedding!

Wedding Wednesday- Bridal Party Attire

April15

Today we are handling bridal party attire.  This really shouldn’t be so difficult, but apparently it is.  So don’t worry I will help!  Your bridal party should look good.  They should feel good.  They shouldn’t plot ways of secretly destroying any wedding picture they are in.  So here are some tips to make them happy and make your day go smoothly.

We will start with Bridesmaid’s dresses.  I don’t know why some people pick out the dresses they do.  They are often hideous.  Even if you were picking a certain color unless it is a really odd color there are so many dresses out there in all colors.  My main suggestion is to pick dresses based on fabric quality.

My maids will be wearing dresses from TwoBirds Bridesmaids.

twobirds

They are made from a jersey fabric that is very flattering.  They can be tied in so many ways that each dress can look different to match the comfort level and body type of maid.  The dress also is very flattering on all sizes whether super skinny or not.  The dress comes in a variety of colors and now you can order plus sizes and bandeaus.  You can also get matching wraps and ties.  I know my maids are excited at how nice the dress looks and the fact that they will actually use it again.  Another big perk: the fabric doesn’t wrinkle easily, read: at all, so you don’t have to worry when packing.

Also the dress is very elegant and can be used for an evening affair or daytime wedding.

I am also a big fan of Ann Taylor’s bridesmaid dresses.  They have some nicer fabrics and the wedding I have seen them used in look very nice.  They are not that expensive and so long as you avoid the shiny taffeta there are some nice looks like these:

149272_6600_lrg254x296

afe6023m_outfit212x399

Honorable mentions go to the Jenny Yoo collection.  I really like so many of the dresses, but don’t like the idea of having to go to a bridal store to find them.  And JCrew.com who has some cute styles, although I think they are a little overpriced for what you get, what dresses are really a good value these days?  At least they have some style like for instance this dress:

jcrew

Available in many colors.

Let them pick their own shoes, if you really insist pick a color, but people’s feet are so different and girls have so many comfort preferences don’t try to match shoes.  I refuse to wear open toed stappy sandals to an all night on the feet event, unless I know they are comfortable and I have worn them before.  I prefer pumps, but I know not everyone is used to wearing 3 1/2 inch heals all day, everyday.  Comfort really is key in this endeavor.  And if you want your Flower Girls and Junior Bridesmaids shoe color to match the Bridesmaids, get the lil ones shoes first they will be harder to fit and find.

Grooms:

My groom got a custom made tux.  I really recommend guys finding a nice tux to purchase rather than a rental.  Fiance had a nice tux, but this one will fit perfectly and have nice style.  If you live in the city and enjoy going out you will have use for a tux.  If you are in the DC area I highly recommend Eric Finn.  They are quality tailors at a price that is well worth it.  They even have a line of ready made tuxs if you are in a big hurry.

Even if your guy isn’t wearing a tux have him get a custom made suit.  Between the purchase of a nice suit and the alterations it will run about the same, but a custom suit fits so much nicer.  And think how much use he will get out of it?  You can even add details like initials or a wedding date to make it special.

Groomsmen:

If your groomsmen are also wearing tuxs then go for the rental.  Do a big chain place, it is just easier.  But please go for a classic tux.  Men generally dislike this formal of clothing, but non-traditional formal clothing is really the pits for many men.  Can I give you a hint ladies?  Don’t pick it out.  Let him do this, he is a big boy he knows what his friends will want to wear and black and white matches any color.  If you go more casual again think custom pants, shirt and tie.  Or for that beach wedding go for high quality linen.  But no matter what ladies let him pick it.  The groomsmen will do a lot less griping if you stay out of it.

Junior Bridesmaids and Flower Girls:

If you are getting married in the Spring I really urge you to check out Marshalls, TJ Maxx or Target pre-Easter.  They have some really cute dresses that would make the perfect dress for a Flower Girl or Jr. Bridesmaid for about 1/3 of the price.  You could also check out some department stores like Sears or JC Penny’s that have a lot of children’s clothing.

We purchased dresses from Marshalls and my Mother added details to make the dresses match more closely to the bridal party.  She trimmed the dresses with ribbons that would match the color scheme, and added some flowers and other things.

If you aren’t that creative try Angel Wears.  They have pretty dresses like the one below for around $60.

hiphopgift_2045_29531007

Or the So Sweet Boutique, which has dresses like the ones you see in bridal stores for much less.  Aren’t these adorable?

easter-dresses-cray-580

For shoes for the girls I really highly suggest Marshalls, TJ Maxx or Zappos.com.  You would be suprised the cool designers making children’s shoes these days: Stuart Weitzman, Carol Little, Donald J. Pliner and Kors.  And if they are not able to wear tights or socks consider an alternate pair of very comfortable cute sandals or something in case they get blisters from flats or strappy shoes.  Girls nowadays love the flip-flops, check out the cute Stuart Weitzman flip-flops I got my mini-maids for the weekend.  Also below are a pair of Silver Kors shoes I think would be really comfortable for kids and super cute and wedding appropriate, even sock ready!

7769-823663-d9994-823578-dBoth available at Zappos.com.  Also at Marshall’s.  The great thing about Zappos.com is the free shipping and returns, so if it takes you a couple tries to get the right size no biggie.  These both come in other colors like pink too!  Love them.

You can’t keep everyone happy, but try to keep those near and dear to you happy, especially the little ones.

Wedding Wednesday- The Registry

April12

Ok, ok so it isn’t Wednesday I will give you that.  I am late.  Readers I urge you for forgiveness.

To make up for it this will be a spectacular Wedding Wednesday on Sunday.

This week’s Topic: The Registry.

You will questions as soon as your are engaged as to where you are registered.  Trust me you will.  And if you are really particular on what you want maybe you want a registry that early.  We have a very small place and don’t have a lot of room for things we don’t need, but all the non-registry gifts we have received are lovely.

So the first decision is when to register- again people will be asking.  I would suggest registering as soon as possible.  Heck yes it is a pain in the butt, but people really would like guidance.  My suggestion is to just register for a few things you know you need- new towels, sheets or table linens and maybe a few fun things like some vases, picture frames, toasting glasses and cake cutters.  That way people will have a good selection, but you won’t be overwhelmed quite yet.

Next decision is where to register-  I suggest registering in multiple places that way people can find somewhere convenient for them.  And check to see if they use the Weddingchannel.com interface.  If so 3% of online purchases can go to a charity you designate.

Macy’s- the pro to Macy’s is that it is everywhere.  Literally everywhere now.  The downfall- it is hard for you to find stuff to register for and it is even harder for your guests to locate those gifts.  They have so many things, but everything is divided by brand instead of by type of item. We went searching for a knife set for a friend, and we looked at 12 different knife sets of the same brand and none were that of the registry.  Then finding someone to find the right one was even more difficult.  So although it might be great for you as you might not have to register in more than one place, it could be difficult for your guests.  What you need:

121584_fpxtifCasual dinnerware that won’t go out of style.  Although you can replace this easier than fine china, you really want something beautiful, but versatile.  When I was little we had white plates with a navy blue stripe around the rim.  I always remember how elegant those plates were in their simplicity.

William Sonoma- The pros- also everywhere.  Also they have a fantastic thank-you note assistant where they even give you the addresses for your thank you cards.  The cons- limited selection.  They have all you ever need for the kitchen, but on dining, server-ware, and the rest of the home it is limited.  Consider this as an alternative registry.  What you need:

img39mThis cutting board is reversible.  The edge makes it great for carving meat because it will catch the juices, as much as you let meat rest there will be some au jus.  Also Bamboo stays more sanitary than other wooden cutting boards, and it looks nice too.

Crate and Barrel- The pros- relatively mid-priced items, furniture, kitchen, dining with lots of options, even some bedding.  The cons- their bedding isn’t that nice, they don’t have china and you have to like slightly modern design.  What you need:

reversibledoublegriddleThis is a reversible griddle/ grill pan that will fit on top of your gas burners.  Great for steaks, pancakes, panini’s, kabobs, polenta rounds, the list goes on and on.  For us it means with a meat press, that we can get rid of our grill pan and panini maker.  So it will clear some space in the kitchen while providing some good eats.

Dillards- The pros- has much of the same goods as Macy’s and other department stores, including china.  It has lots of sales.  The con- it is a regional location and is lacking in really nice serverware and brands. Also their online interface is awful.  What you need:

hq-084_ziThis classic pitcher by Waterford is timeless and classic.  I think it would fit in any home for a casual dinner or more formal.  It reminds me of a more formal version of the old Fiestaware pitchers.

Bloomingdales- The pros- the store is easily laid out and finding something is very easy.  They have a nice selection of china, bedding, housewares, kitchen and furniture.  Staff is easily found to help locate and package any selections and they have free gift wrap.  They have a good web interface.  Also they are extremely helpful in helping you add items to your registry in person or over the phone and will also help with any mishaps quickly and efficiently.  The cons- in metropolitan areas only, a little more pricey than other department stores with fewer sales covering the whole store.  They have a thank you card manager, as well, but it doesn’t give you the return addresses. What you need:

945249_fpxtifSomeone is going to want to get you the big wooden salad bowl and salad spoons.  You don’t know who it is, but someone will have that urge.  Cut them off at the pass by putting this beautiful bowl and serving spoons on your registry.  It is so pretty they will hopefully realize that the big wooden bowl and spoons are not on your list for a reason.  Plus when you are not using this, it would be beautiful sitting in a glass china cabinet.  I really feel a piece of Michael Aram is essential.  From a picture frame,  to beautiful trivets, to this bowl this brand has some amazing designs.

Pottery Barn- The pros- nice web interface, is a little more spread out than Bloomingdales. The cons- again like Crate and Barrel it has a limited selection and no china.  Also it does tend to be more pricey than Crate and Barrel or Macy’s. What you need:

img99m

With classic casual dinnerware or china, spruce up the table with colorful linens.  The stitch on these makes them very classy looking, while the colors available could make any table very fun.  Also you can tell even from the picture that the linen used is a nice quality.  Just remember they will have to be ironed.  Their quilts are also made from really nice fabric and get so soft in the wash.  I would highly recommend adding one of those too.

So where did I register?  Bloomingdales, Crate and Barrel and William Sonoma.  We live in the city and a majority of our visitors either will order online or be within 20 miles of a store.  We did most of our registry at Bloomingdales and put a few things that Bloomingdales didn’t have on the other registries.

Now what to register for:

On any registry that you need to check a box that says you will accept gift cards, do.

Bloomingdales has a great service that analyzes your registry to tell you if you have enough gifts in the right price ranges.

I always think it is best to err on the side of too many.  People who can’t attend the wedding might like to send you a gift, you will need shower gifts and then the wedding gifts.  You want to make sure you have all price ranges considered.  More on the lower so if people want to pair multiple small things.

You should register for china, unless you already have really nice china, this might be your only chance to get nice china paid for. Pick out a pattern that will always be classic and stylish try to avoid bright colors and patterns that you will tire of or that will go out of season.  Also remember you will be using your china year round.

If you get china, make sure you look to see if they have coffer service, gravy boats and serving platters and bowls to match.  Likewise if you get silverware check to see if there are matching serving pieces.

Register for a cake serving set and toasting flutes.  Some people will want to get you these so they feel that their gift is a part of your wedding.

Now you need to deeply analyze your stock.  If you have nothing that is easy, or if you have a really huge house.  I don’t.  So we went for as many multiple use things as possible.

For instance I don’t have room for a slow cooker and a rice cooker; however, I would like a rice cooker to help with my sushi, and a slow cooker to slow cook.  So I registered for this:

41zt8dnne3l_sl500_aa280_It slow cooks, rice cooks or steams.

Also you don’t need a food processor that slices, chops, purees and makes dough and a mini-chopper, and a mandolin, and knives.  And really unless you are a super chef, I really think the small cuisinart should do you.  I don’t need a mini-chopper.  I have good knives.  If you feel you need all those things you need a course on knife skills.  Unless you can a whole garden, then I will give it to you.  Also make sure you feel your knives and try them.  William Sonoma is a goood place for this.  Don’t buy Shun if they don’t feel good too.  Don’t buy Global knives unless they feel good in your hand for all types of chopping.  Also you don’t need 12 knives.  really you need a couple nice chef knives, a sanotoku or two, a boning knife, paring knife and a bread knife.  That’s really all you should need.  A knife set really is a waste as you will get a lot of knives you don’t need and you might like the chef’s knife of one brand and sanotoku of another.

Replace spatulas and spoons if they are old and worn, baking sheets that don’t cook well.

Get a pizza pan if you don’t have one or a pizza stone, they are really nice.  They help cook your pizzas evenly and pizza makes a great fast meal, and an exceptionally fun meal for guests to help you customize with their favorite toppings.

Get what you need or would like to replace.

Get really nice sheets.  If you don’t have 300 count sheets, you need them, multiple sets so that when you need to wash them you are not without others, trust me you won’t go back.  Make sure you guest bedroom has nice sheets, too.

Get nice glassware.  If you like beer, get Waterford Pilsners.  If you drink liquor get nice high balls, martini glasses and etc.  If you like wine get decanteurs and wine glasses.  We already have casual glasses we love, but we had Ikea wine glasses before, not anymore.  But get some that you can use everyday and won’t kill yourself replacing, like a casual Waterford set, in case you break them and a fancy set.  That way you don’t have to be careful everytime you have people over for a cocktail party.

Make sure to get linens for all seasons, containers for in cabinets for things like flour and sugar, candles and diffusers, nice liquor decanters, a Le Crueset dutch oven (trust me you want one), a really good skillet without non-stick coating, a cast iron skillet, a non-stick skillet, sauce pots, baking pans.

Also make sure you have a tab on the very first page of your wedding website directing guests to the registry.  They will ask for it, they will not find it make it easy.

You can register for luggage, the only problem is that it often won’t come in time for when you need it.

Also consider listing a charity that you support.

That is my registry advice.  If you have any other specific questions on if a product is good, I highly recommend using chowhound.com they have a board called Cookware that is a nice board to view before stocking your registry, search for registry in the threads there will be lots of hits, those people cook a lot, they know what is good.  And feel free to ask me.

Good luck.  I found that this can be a really tiring experience and not near as much fun as you think it is, I was lucky that my fiance was really good at taking control when I was feeling stressed and overwhelmed.  I suggest devoting a whole day to this and taking multiple breaks just to get something to drink or eat so you don’t get too worn out.   And remember if you get odd gifts not on your registry you can’t use, ebay is a good thing.
