Penguin Soda Maker

So if you don’t know by now I am a little obsessed with all things Penguin. It started as my sorority mascot, but then as I watched the little guys on TV and in films I loved their quirky personalities. Then I saw them in person in Australia and the love deepened all that much more, especially after I got to touch a poor little guy after being rescued on the beach, with wounds from an encounter with a shark (don’t worry he made it).

But this Penguin by Soda Stream USA is not being posted for my obsession, but for that of a friend. My friend Warren loves sparkling water. And this little guy turns regular water into sparkling water pronto! He can also make sodas.

The great thing is he does all this without batteries or electricity. So my friend Warren could even take it on his sailboat. You can add flavors or juices and you can control the level of fizz. So on a hot day you could add a twist of lemon or lime without any cutting.

And the reusable glass bottles save you from buying plastic bottle after plastic bottle. I tend to drink more water if there is a splash of flavor or some fizz, don’t you?

Wedding Wednesday: For Kelly

There is nothing quite like the bond of siblings, I should know I have nine! Most recently, my sister Kelly got engaged. She is getting married at the beautiful Christ Church in the Northern Neck of Virginia.

Last weekend I got the joy of helping her to find her perfect wedding dress at J. Crew. It is a simple, but sleek gown that just mirrors her effortless beauty. The Cecelia (as a note she looks much better in it than the model):

I told her I would send her the link to Lilac Bijoux as they have really neat jewelry, but their online selections were lacking in choices appropriate for a wedding dress. Thank goodness for some of my favorite Etsy shops that I can give as a back-up!!!

So to follow are some inspirations I had- and as a note to Kelly who actually reads my blog, don’t feel like you need to like any of these, but check out the shops they have some really neat things.

Kelly has a beautiful tan complection and dark hair, and that made me think of one of three color combinations: 1) bright and fun accessories 2. golden hues to celebrate the Golden August of her wedding month or 3. aqua colors that she seemed to gravitate to when shopping.

On the colorful theme Whichgoose had this beautiful Artic Roses Teal clip set. I adore all of Whichgooses sight and it helps that she is from Frederick, MD. If you ever want neat floral or nature hairpieces, shoes or clips try her sight first.

Bringing Gold Back

In this time where everyone (or just Fox News) is telling old people to buy gold, and telling everyone else to sell their gold, gold has become passe. Which is a real shame because gold is a fabulous statement. Gold is classic, like Coco Channel, if you pick the right pieces it will look amazing forever. Anyone who doesn’t like gold just has never owned the right piece of gold.

But let’s face it when it comes to dining you just can’t afford the gold or sterling silverware that used to be customary in yesteryear, and it is so pricey you feel bad even putting it on a registry. But with many of the beautiful china styles, with amazing colors and warm hues out there you really do need a classy set of gold settings.

Time Defying Presents

Don’t Bother Me I’m In My Tent

So I know all this snow has blown your holiday shopping. Hopefully you are like me and shop early. But in case you don’t gotta love overnight shipping.

Remember the little ones are the most important as far as lists are concerned. I was just browsing around and came across this play tent. Unfortunately not guaranteed deliverable by Christmas, but New Years! Or if you do like me save this Seller as a favorite for future gifts (would be a wonderful gift for a birthday to be used when it is nice out). It is the kind of thing I would have loved as a child. It would have gone well with my wooden indoor/outdoor play house thing and my love of all things playhouse like or encapsulating as a child. Heck, I wouldn’t mind it now… feeling a bit distracted, go have tent time!

And it is personalized, which is perfect for all those of us who love to see our names on our stuff (really who doesn’t?). Anyway just a last minute thought…

Wedding Wednesday- Classy Hair Accessories

I really like the look of old fashioned hair accessories. Big horn combs and such, you know the ones without tons of gobbly gook Swarkovski crystals. A Sustainable Christmas

So my L.A. friend is tasked with a sustainable Christmas. You know recycle, reuse, repurpose.

I have lots of books I have read that I could pass on, or jewelry from Grandma (all those clip earrings I don’t wear). I have made spiced nuts in the past or cookies. I have given presents of cleaning and organizing closets. Unfortunately sometimes, especially when you are moving around a lot for school or just starting out, you don’t have a lot of things or time. But don’t worry you can still find some cool sustainable finds:

Decking the Halls

Recycled Paper Garland- what a neat and colorful Christmas decoration. My family always had particular garlands that we used around greenery and this one would look great with all the colorful nutcrackers I hang on my garland. Available on Etsy, here.

I love making beaded jewelry for people at Christmas. One of my favorite necklaces is made from paper beads that my stepsisters made. Paper Beads is a great blog for learning to make paper beads, and then using the paper beads for different uses. Below are Paper Bead Ornaments you can make with instructions on the Paper Beads Blog, such a neat creative site, definitely check it out! If you aren’t up for making them yourself, you can already buy ready made ones at another great Etsy site here- upcycling paper and reusing it, very sustainable, while supporting small artists.

Upcycled Gifts

Beer has always been a treasured thing. But perhaps not all those empty beer bottles. Luckily now many of them are recycled, but here is another cool use- drinking glasses. Unlike the above beads, I suggest not trying to make this at home, but check out this Etsy Shop with many different beer bottles to choose from.

Need a more flowery find? I absolutely love the jewelry made from old spoons. The details that went into old silver spoons are just incredible. This ring is beautiful and a bargain. I don’t know why I am even posting this, now it will be sold in no time. Luckily this artist has lots of neat spoons to continue making really neat things.

Recycle that Wrap

My brother in law wraps his Christmas presents in Newspaper, my brother wraps his in Trader Joe bags. Both are great ways to save paper, and then that paper is of the type that is normally recyclable too. I save my ribbon all year long to use again at Christmas. Another great embellishment is to stamp them with a cool Christmas stamp. Since we don’t get daily papers I steal them from recycling downstairs where they stack them in big piles.

Plan the Party

Here in Virginia there is a lot of wine to love, and how better to show off the benefits of staying sustainable than practicing what you preach. Keep your party hopping with local wine, and keep it fresh with beautiful, unique bottle stoppers; I like this one made from recycled materials. Find it here.

Dress up your sweet treats with these vintage reusable cupcake toppers! You could also use them as reusable toothpicks. Just make sure you have a small basket for them to be discarded in, so you can wash them and reuse.

If you live out in the country you can even buy a Christmas tree with the roots and plant it afterwards. My friend Suz’s family did that one year.

So even if you feel the need to buy gifts try to buy local, buy recycled goods or buy things that you can turn into something neat. I turn to Etsy because I like their artists, but a quick search and you can find other places with recycled goods. But don’t forget your own merits. You don’t have to be a jeweler or baker, give someone some hours of your computer skills, or teach them a skill you have they might enjoy. Giving someone your time and company is always the best gift.

Cool Etsy Vintage Clothing Finds

My friend Alysha loves shopping and sustainability, and while I saw all the L.A. fashion I thought to myself of all the interesting vintage finds that looked as good or better than what was in the stores right now. I love Etsy.com for their great handmade finds, but they also have really neat Vintage sellers, as well. I wanted to take a moment to show some of their finds that are very fashion forward.

Mod Caramel Drop Waist Coat- I love this coat, you may have to resew on that one button that is a bit droopy, but I have had brand new coats that I had to resew on a button for, no big deal. It would fit but would not leave a ton of room, if I had the extra money to spend I would buy it for someone I really liked, like my friend, she would look awesome in it.

I saw an uglier version of this gorgeous Royal Blue Jacket in a store in L.A. This version is 80′s cool, not 80′s bad… you know you like it.

This is a great belt. I have one similar one in brown that I love. This one has a pretty small waist, but would be wonderful to cinch a great white shirt.

I love this VintageBlue Dress. It would be so cute for a holiday party with a skinny silver belt and some nice rhinestone or diamond jewelry.

And this one would double as beautiful work wear. Now I think Dorthy Draper would really like this.

This Yellow Dress is a little summery, but sooo Michelle Obama. Really classy, and to make it a bit more FLOTUS you could pair it with a cream or white cardigan.

A casual belted dress that would be so comfortable! Love it for summer when I want to throw on a dress and start the day or have an interesting beach cover up.

So I am not allowed to have any more White Sweaters as my collection is quite large, but if I could this might make the list.

And this dress has an amazing print. It is so cute, really nice attention to detail. I have a friend that had an online handle of SunshineandBeauty and this dress is sunshine and beauty.

And to top it off, a Neat Print Dress that is sooo J. Crew or Tory Burch, for a fraction of the cost. My sister in law would love these colors. She could share it too…

And can’t find or afford those fantastic electric blue pumps in the stores, well check these Pumps out, they are rocking.

Wedding Wenesday- It all begins with a ring.

I should have news soon, as in tomorrow, on the job front yay! But all this has been such an ordeal. So here is to more fun and pretty things!

I love to check out engagement rings. I check out my friends’ rings, that girl on the metro next to me, that woman shopping in Neiman Marcus with the to die for bag, all of them. And there are some really pretty rings out there. For me though there are only two kinds: simple and elegant or detailed and antique looking in design. I have a beautiful Tacori ring that is really detailed and very classic and I love it. But I caught sight of these rings and decided in a different life if I were going to go with simple and elegant the rings from Everlon are what I would choose. They don’t have their own website, but are available from many retailers, including JR Dunn who has a very handy online website here.

I have always really liked the look of knots. That nautical knot jewelry is just so neat looking. I am fascinated by braids essentially hair knots of different varieties. Knots of all kinds just are really beautiful to me (unless I have to get them out of course). These knots are so simple looking but just the smooth medal against a beautiful diamond just really highlights both elements. So guys if you have a gal that is the simple, but elegant type I think this will be a real winner. They are very reasonable for engagement rings- a 14kt white gold with 3/4 carat diamond is $2990.00. So long as your gal doesn’t want something huge 3/4 carat is a really nice size. (Another view)

AND as a deal sweetener There will be ample ideas for engagement gifts as they have matching earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Some of my favorites are below.

I love this diamond necklace- it would look beautiful alone or with just plain brilliant (round) diamond earrings, which many girls own. It could be worn on a chain or with a nice omega, which is a thicker gold necklace that has a bolder look. I really like reversible omegas one side being white gold one side being yellow gold so it is really versatile.

Both of these earrings are really nice for a girl who doesn’t have diamond earrings. They are so simple they would match nicely with other diamond jewelry that she may acquire over the years. I personally don’t like drop earrings as much as ones that are closer to the ear so I prefer the bottom pair, but both really are nice.

I have wanted a white gold diamond bracelet now for a while, but I will be waiting as they are a pretty penny and my dear Hubby just bought me a stunning engagement ring and wedding band that is just as beautiful and detailed. There was one bracelet I saw in a cute little jewelry store that I love in St. Micheals that was similar to this one that I just loved. So maybe ten or twenty years from now this beauty will come my way.

Last, but not least is a stunning ring for the right hand it has both white gold and yellow gold. I really like this idea because I have a really nice watch that is two tone, and some really nice gold jewelry in yellow gold so it kind of brings it all together in a matchey matchey way.

Wedding Wednesday- Because Sometimes You Need A Hat

I have always been one of those lucky women who can wear a hat, almost any hat really. And there is something grand about a hat. It hearkens back to an era of civility. It dares to go where few women these days tread. But with the recent resurgence of the head band with large fascinators I dare to say hats will be coming back.

Recently my Mother traveled through Ireland and she found Kathleen McAuliffe a woman who makes extraordinary hats. When she saw these hats she immediately thought of my friend who is going to have the most beautiful wedding this summer and who has really fun style. So I wanted to pass along the fun for any bride or wedding party that dares to be a little more eclectic in a really beautiful classy way. They are pricey, but absolutely beautiful and really top quality, as they are hand made and have been featured worldwide. Below are some of my favorites:

Perfect for accompanying a cute simple bridesmaid dress.

Black used to be a no-no at weddings, but nowadays anything goes, and ooh wouldn’t this go so well at a formal outdoor wedding? I can just see it looking so beautiful and demur for a wedding set on a beautiful stone patio.

For the bride who doesn’t want a gigantic bird, but a gorgeous loopdy loop instead. This would be to die for with a simple form fitting dress.

Now this to me is a show stopper, and it would photograph so well.

The perfect Mother of the Bride hat. It won’t be prettier than the bride, but it will grab the appropriate amount of attention the Mother of the Bride deserves, plus I think it has a bit of authority to it.

Now if you go to a wedding and someone is wearing this, you just know you are going to have a good time. It is called Kate and it is just longing to come home and reside with this Kate.

This hat is just so cute. And wearable to so many things. And wouldn’t it just pair so well with a formal tux?

Now Ms. McAuliffe makes more casual hate too, and while I love her show stoppers above, her casual hats are really exquisite and much more affordable. This one below looks like the perfect honeymoon getaway hat to me.

Of course you don’t need a wedding to own one of these, they would be perfect for a derby, a cocktail party or for a really cute night out. I am so glad my Mother found this place, and it is such good timing because I am telling you- hats will be back.
