I love my DSLR. I don’t love many camera bags. Even the cute ones look, well like camera or diaper bags. I have found a couple on Etsy that are pretty cute, but why buy another bag when you could buy an insert, for less money, that will fit into: oh say a Louis Vuitton tote, or a simple leather bag, or whatever your favorite tote or shoulder bag is, or one that you like, but isn’t your everyday bag anymore. Super Cute Etsy Dress

While perusing Etsy for other goods, I found this super cute dress. It just won’t fit me, by inches… BUT it may fit you and would be really nice. Lots of color, but really classic lines, although it may need shortened. I love it. $59 here.

And then I saw this dress, again inches too small (I am working on that but not fast enough to buy clothes in anticipation), but very me! Classic looks with a punch of color. My husband always wishes I would wear color. If only these two dresses were my size!

I try to be very careful when buying vintage. It has to be impeccable and absolutely me. These are both in great quality, with timeless style and nice looking fit.

I know that the season for wearing these shoes is over, but they are a real bargain at $24. If I worse a size 5 I would snap them up in a heartbeat because nautical is always, always in season. A Little Halloween Magic

With Fall in the air, Halloween has started to come into my thoughts. I also have a niece who really likes the whole Twilight thing, so more and more Gothic-Romantic items having been catching my eye for this year. So in line with those thoughts I found some things I thought I would share:

These Fingerless Cranberry Gloves from ZenandCoffee are really cool, and would keep your arms warm on a cold Autumn Night. I also like the pop of color, which makes them wearable at another time. $22 on Etsy. From pop to goth all depending on your look.

This little jacket reminds me of a super cute jacket my Niece had for my brother’s wedding. It is a little pricey, at $75, but something you could get a lot of use out of because it could be worn for a date night with jeans, Halloween or a party. From maryandangelika.

I think many of you saw my wedding dress, I loved the corset top on it, so this really made me drool, $155 from olgaitaly.

Next up is some perfume for the eve. Try this unisex perfume by Solstice Scents, Monster Mash for Boys and Ghouls. The scent is a little dark, but I like some deep scents from time to time, especially after all the light and floral scents of Summer.

And last, but not least, your escort. Now don’t worry if you don’t have a two legged companion, you can have a very dapper escort anyway. And perhaps he will do some tricks for treats. Here is a handsome tux from Poochie Heaven for your date to escort you with.

Guanajuato, Mexico Report

An off the beaten path jewel in Mexico.

We recently ventured to Guanajuato, Mexico for our dear friend’s, Warren and Estela, wedding. Traveling there I knew nothing about the area, except what Wikipedia said: UNESCO World Heritage Site, mining history, yadda yadda. Getting there was pretty easy, fly to Houston, fly to Guanajuato/Leon and then take a short car ride to the city. Once we got there we quickly realized that this was an extremely beautiful historic area. Many of the roads are under the city in old aqueducts or pathwayd carved for traffic, so taxi rides are kind of neat darting in and out of ground. The houses are all beautifully colored due to subsidized paint costs to make the town welcoming and colorful. The central square with its thick perfectly groomed trees is a wonderful place to hang out and relax while settling in to the rustic beauty of the area. And they have a Starbucks for you who need your fix.

We stayed at the El Camino Real. This was a great hotel. The restaurant and bar had wonderful staff. The rooms were nicely appointed and spacious, the beds were comfortable, the hotel was impeccably clean, the staff were friendly. I especially enjoyed the pool which had a zero entry platform so you could lay in the water and relax. We had one of the rooms up on the terrace and ours had a brick dome ceiling that was really neat. (Check the internet for specials, their website list price is much much more than what we paid.)

We had a lot of planned wedding activities, but luckily we had some time to explore the city, as well. There are many beautiful historic buildings definitely worth checking out. I highly suggest going in the ornate Teatro Juarez near the main city square, if there is a show playing it would be worth the price to see the show and the theater. Lots of marble and ornately carved wood make this a real jewel. Many of the buildings date back to the 1600s when the Spanish still occupied the city. Just wander through this city and it’s winding corridors around the central square, the university and the market, giving yourself time for stops. Stopping in the churches and neighborhood squares you can admire the beauty of the areas architecture.

The market is a great place to plan a stop. There are food stalls to eat at, fresh produce, local crafts and all sorts of goods for sale. I found some really well crafted leather purses, as well as, some neat gifts for family and friends at home. I picked up a great, colorful woven market basket for me, that even when packed full is easy to carry. Specialties in the area are candies, silver and gold jewelry, leather goods and pottery. You can find jewelry ranging from very classic hand crafted to modern and sleek styles. Wandering around town make sure you stop into one of the local candy stores to pick up some goodies. I especially liked the caramels and coconut candies. This was my favorite part of the visit. Every corner revealed more city with interesting buildings and neat neighborhoods and stores. Often one store had many functions, the neat traditional jewelry took the counter space in the front of a shop, while barbers groomed clipped and shaved in the back.

Another neat stop is the Capelo Art Gallery, website here. One of the galleries also featured really neat pottery from the area.

If you want to see where all that silver came from head up to the La Valencia Mine. This is where the wedding took place and it is a neat old mine, now a garden and quite challenging golf course. Surrounded by stacked stone walls you can envision what it would be like when those shafts were active.

We had some great meals downtown. Casa Valadez was a great breakfast spot, with out of this world bread and salsas. I highly recommend huevos rancheros. But really you can’t go wrong on their breakfast menu. I wish we could have had another meal here, as well. Website here. They also have nutritional information on the website.

We also ate at the Hotel Santa Fe and both had enchiladas mineras a regional specialty. Chicken thigh over cheese enchiladas with a sauce with tomatoes, carrots and potatoes. A tiny bit bland for what many think of as Mexican food, but very good and homey, especially with the chile sauce that was on the table. This is comfort food for this area.

The rest of our meals were at planned wedding events, save a stop at a local bakery for some freshly made doughnuts.

This town is best for the laid back traveler who wants to be off the beaten path from the touristy beaches, and wants stuff to see and do, but not a jam packed schedule. It was really fun to wander, shop and interact with the people in the town who were all generally very friendly. Not much English is spoken though, and we appreciated help from our friends communicating at times as we know no Spanish. And do be alert to drinking water and eating vegetables washed in water when you aren’t in a big hotel or central restaurant. El Camino Real has filtered water even in the showers which meant less worry when you were showering and brushing your teeth and you didn’t have to ask if the water for your morning tea was filtered.

This is a place that I loved. This to me was very quintessential Mexico. It was about people and experiences.

Wedding Wednesday: For Kelly

There is nothing quite like the bond of siblings, I should know I have nine! Most recently, my sister Kelly got engaged. She is getting married at the beautiful Christ Church in the Northern Neck of Virginia.

Last weekend I got the joy of helping her to find her perfect wedding dress at J. Crew. It is a simple, but sleek gown that just mirrors her effortless beauty. The Cecelia (as a note she looks much better in it than the model):

I told her I would send her the link to Lilac Bijoux as they have really neat jewelry, but their online selections were lacking in choices appropriate for a wedding dress. Thank goodness for some of my favorite Etsy shops that I can give as a back-up!!!

So to follow are some inspirations I had- and as a note to Kelly who actually reads my blog, don’t feel like you need to like any of these, but check out the shops they have some really neat things.

Kelly has a beautiful tan complection and dark hair, and that made me think of one of three color combinations: 1) bright and fun accessories 2. golden hues to celebrate the Golden August of her wedding month or 3. aqua colors that she seemed to gravitate to when shopping.

On the colorful theme Whichgoose had this beautiful Artic Roses Teal clip set. I adore all of Whichgooses sight and it helps that she is from Frederick, MD. If you ever want neat floral or nature hairpieces, shoes or clips try her sight first.

Some fun earrings and a necklace from Joojooland.

And a bracelet from Jenny Trinh. (I would add one Peruvian turquoise bead right beside the pearl, and I am sure Jenny would add it for you too)

For the golden theme, this bridal hair comb caught my eye.

And this simple, but elegant necklace from one of my very favorite Etsy jewelers, Made by Sam.

And lastly the aqua color.

I really like the look of old fashioned hair accessories. Big horn combs and such, you know the ones without tons of gobbly gook Swarkovski crystals. Cool Etsy Vintage Clothing Finds

My friend Alysha loves shopping and sustainability, and while I saw all the L.A. fashion I thought to myself of all the interesting vintage finds that looked as good or better than what was in the stores right now. I love Etsy.com for their great handmade finds, but they also have really neat Vintage sellers, as well. I wanted to take a moment to show some of their finds that are very fashion forward.

Mod Caramel Drop Waist Coat- I love this coat, you may have to resew on that one button that is a bit droopy, but I have had brand new coats that I had to resew on a button for, no big deal. It would fit but would not leave a ton of room, if I had the extra money to spend I would buy it for someone I really liked, like my friend, she would look awesome in it.

I saw an uglier version of this gorgeous Royal Blue Jacket in a store in L.A. This version is 80′s cool, not 80′s bad… you know you like it.

This is a great belt. I have one similar one in brown that I love. This one has a pretty small waist, but would be wonderful to cinch a great white shirt.

I love this VintageBlue Dress. It would be so cute for a holiday party with a skinny silver belt and some nice rhinestone or diamond jewelry.

And this one would double as beautiful work wear. Now I think Dorthy Draper would really like this.

This Yellow Dress is a little summery, but sooo Michelle Obama. Really classy, and to make it a bit more FLOTUS you could pair it with a cream or white cardigan.

A casual belted dress that would be so comfortable! Love it for summer when I want to throw on a dress and start the day or have an interesting beach cover up.

So I am not allowed to have any more White Sweaters as my collection is quite large, but if I could this might make the list.

And this dress has an amazing print. It is so cute, really nice attention to detail. I have a friend that had an online handle of SunshineandBeauty and this dress is sunshine and beauty.

And to top it off, a Neat Print Dress that is sooo J. Crew or Tory Burch, for a fraction of the cost. My sister in law would love these colors. She could share it too…

And can’t find or afford those fantastic electric blue pumps in the stores, well check these Pumps out, they are rocking.

So don’t worry you can be eco-friendly, fashion forward and save some money. That’s a win-win-win. And if you make an Etsy Account you can create a favorites list and export it (great for X-mas).

Wedding Wednesday- Because Sometimes You Need A Hat

I have always been one of those lucky women who can wear a hat, almost any hat really. And there is something grand about a hat. It hearkens back to an era of civility. It dares to go where few women these days tread. But with the recent resurgence of the head band with large fascinators I dare to say hats will be coming back.

Recently my Mother traveled through Ireland and she found Kathleen McAuliffe a woman who makes extraordinary hats. When she saw these hats she immediately thought of my friend who is going to have the most beautiful wedding this summer and who has really fun style. So I wanted to pass along the fun for any bride or wedding party that dares to be a little more eclectic in a really beautiful classy way. They are pricey, but absolutely beautiful and really top quality, as they are hand made and have been featured worldwide. Below are some of my favorites:

Perfect for accompanying a cute simple bridesmaid dress.

Black used to be a no-no at weddings, but nowadays anything goes, and ooh wouldn’t this go so well at a formal outdoor wedding? I can just see it looking so beautiful and demur for a wedding set on a beautiful stone patio.

For the bride who doesn’t want a gigantic bird, but a gorgeous loopdy loop instead. This would be to die for with a simple form fitting dress.

Now this to me is a show stopper, and it would photograph so well.

The perfect Mother of the Bride hat. It won’t be prettier than the bride, but it will grab the appropriate amount of attention the Mother of the Bride deserves, plus I think it has a bit of authority to it.

Now if you go to a wedding and someone is wearing this, you just know you are going to have a good time. It is called Kate and it is just longing to come home and reside with this Kate.

This hat is just so cute. And wearable to so many things. And wouldn’t it just pair so well with a formal tux?

Now Ms. McAuliffe makes more casual hate too, and while I love her show stoppers above, her casual hats are really exquisite and much more affordable. This one below looks like the perfect honeymoon getaway hat to me.

Of course you don’t need a wedding to own one of these, they would be perfect for a derby, a cocktail party or for a really cute night out. I am so glad my Mother found this place, and it is such good timing because I am telling you- hats will be back.
