Passionfish in Reston
So a little birdie told me that I needed more food posts. (Ok, so I don’t really communicate with birds, but I would really enjoy that…)
I am slightly notorious for my love of food and food knowledge. I am a more than slightly notorious chowhound poster on the DC board who just tries to remain as un-obnoxious as possible, most of the time. Although I have had some epic chow battles with people, I think I won. And some of my readers know this and have some expectations. I am anything but one who does not meet expectations. So readers more food posts, stat.
Lately I have been on a vicious wedding diet, which does not lead to a lot of eating out, but I have done some.
One splurge of late was Easter brunch at Passionfish in Reston. Brought to us by the creators of such places as DC Coast, Ceiba and the likes.
I really liked the clean open interior, it was reminiscent of Zaytinya, with much better noise control.

They don’t normally do brunch, but most brunch items are featured on the lunch or dinner menu.
First course: Crab and Corn chowder, not as white creamy as most crab and corn chowders in a good way. It had lots of sweet fresh crab and a bit of a kick in a good way. The soup itself was a light brown so it was enhanced with some stock. I really though it had excellent flavor and was a good splurge item after weeks of healthy eating.
I also had a taste of the tortilla soup, which was also very flavorful, it had nice texture very smooth with crunch from the tortilla, but not overly crunchy to make it an awkward soup.
Overall if you like soup, this is a great place to get it.
Entree: I had the catch of the day which was fresh halibut grilled with a bit of lemon and a nicely dressed simple salad. The quality of the fish was very good so that when prepared all it needed was that bit of lemon to bring out the flavor. It was appropriately flaky and delicate, but held together nicely.
I didn’t have the Blackened Tilapia, but it looked sooo good I am going to have it next time.
Dessert: I had the fresh rhubarb crisp. It was appropriately sweet and tart, nicely warm with a dollop of ice cream to melt over the top. I was happy the portion was not too huge, as by that point I was so full, but you just can’t stop eating good fresh rhubarb. I also stole a doughnut hole and those were good too, although the espresso ice cream/sauce they came with was a little strong.
Overall I was most impressed with how fresh the base ingredients in each dish were, especially the seafood. Seasoning was applied appropriately and not too liberally so the seafood really was the main focus. Fiance pointed out that even the hollandaise was appropriately light and flavorful and wasn’t gloopy.
I definitely will be going back. I will be interested also to try the sushi and oysters at some point. Don’t they look good?

I also have to give them kudos, if you are on a diet they have dishes like the catch of the day which make you able to enjoy a nice meal out without having to nitpick. And you don’t feel like you are missing out when you see what others around you are eating. To me that is really something important at this point.
Also be sure to check out their Events tab, as they put recipes by Jeff Tunks up!
